5 Steps to entering Aged Care

Step 1

Apply for an ACAT Assessment

You’ll need to be assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) to find out what level of care you need. To book an assessment for yourself or a family member, call My Aged Care or call us on 1800 960 433 and a friendly Client Advisor can help you get started.

Step 2

Find a community that suits you

While you’re waiting for your ACAT assessment letter, you can start researching providers to find an aged care community that will suit your care needs. Some other things to consider include location, accommodation, meals and other services and fees and charges.

Step 3

Figure out the costs

How much you pay when you move into an aged care residence will depend on your financial situation. Our Client Advisors can explain the costs to you – just call  1800 960 433. We also recommend that seek independent financial advice prior to moving in.

Step 4

Apply to a provider

To move into an aged care service, you’ll need to complete an application pack and provide other forms or documents to support your application. If you would like to apply to a Lutheran Services aged care service, our Client Advisors can help you with the paperwork.

Step 5

Time to move in

Once you have returned your paperwork, the provider will confirm whether your application has been accepted and agree an admission date. Then, you’re ready to move in! Your service manager will be there to make sure you have everything you need and welcome you home.

You’re not alone. We’ll help you every step of the way.

We understand how daunting the Aged Care process may seem. That’s why at Lutheran Services, we have dedicated, local Client and Community Advisors who are with you every step of the way. They happily answer all your questions and guide you through the process at your pace – step by step. They will help you with your paperwork and explain anything that might be confusing. So don’t go it alone. Give us a call today and meet your Client and Community Advisor. We look forward to helping you and your family.

How much does it cost?

How much does it cost?

Lutheran Services Residential Aged Care Services are government approved and subsidised services offering care and support to eligible people.

A potential resident’s financial situation does not affect their ability to live in a Lutheran Services Residential Aged Care Service, but it will impact what they may have to pay for the service. When entering aged care you will pay for two things:

  1. Your room (accommodation fees)
  2. Your care (living and care fees)

How much you can afford to contribute to the cost of your care and accommodation is determined by the government using an income and asset assessment.

Accommodation Fees

This is the cost of your room and is set by individual providers based on the types of rooms available, and the geographic location of the service. The accommodation charge comes in the form of a refundable lump sum, non-refundable daily payments, or a combination of both.

A Combined Income and Assets Assessment will place you in one of three categories that will determine the amount you will be asked to pay:

  • Supported: The government will pay for your accommodation charge
  • Partially supported: The government will pay for some of your accommodation charge and you’ll be asked to pay the rest
  • Financial (or self-funded): You’ll be required to pay the full cost of the accommodation

Living and Care Fees

  • Basic Daily Care Fee

This is for your day to day living costs such as meals, cleaning, laundry, heating and cooling. The fee is set by the Australian Government and is the same across all aged care communities. Generally, it’s set at 85% of the single person rate of the basic age pension.

  • Means-Tested Care Fee

This is an extra contribution towards the cost of care that residents may need to pay, on top of the basic daily fee, depending on income and assets. This fee is also set by the Government.

  • Additional Services

Some providers offer Additional Services at an extra daily cost. Additional Services pays for those things that the Government does not cover but make every day a little brighter and enhance quality of life.

Figuring out what you pay

Use our Fee Calculator

If you are required to contribute towards your Accommodation fees, there are three payment options you can choose from:

1. Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD)

You pay this as a lump sum. It’s a standard room price set by the aged care home and it’s fully refunded when you leave.

2. Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP)

This option is the equivalent of the option above…but paid in daily instalments. It’s an interest only payment and is non-refundable. For example, if a room cost $400,000, and the interest rates are 5% your daily fee would be charged at 5% of the $400,000 or $54.79 a day.

3. Combination Payment (RAD & DAP)

This option is a combination of the other two types of payment. You can choose to pay a partial lump sum amount and then the rest as a daily accommodation payment. Only the partial lump sum payment is refundable when you exit.

This tool helps you to explore what your daily accommodation payment (DAP) would be if you choose not to pay the full Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD).

The food is good around here

Here to answer your questions

An aged care home provides accommodation and care for older people who can no longer live independently in their own home due to health reasons.

You can live in an aged care home permanently or come for a short stay to recover from an illness (this is called respite). A short term respite stay is often handy when you’re transitioning back home after a hospital stay or for when your carer needs a break.

We suggest you visit a few different places, including ours, to make sure you find a home that suits you. When you visit you can meet some of the staff to get a feel for the place and find out about the types of services they offer.

The application process is straight-forward and you can apply to as many homes as you like. Every place should explain to you about the fees and charges that you may be asked to pay. These should be included in the agreement that you make with your aged care home.

We’d love to show you around and let you know what makes us different. You can book a tour by giving us a call on 1800 960 433 or clicking here.

What you pay depends on your circumstances. There’s a combination of different fees – for most people, they are made up of four parts:

  • a basic daily fee
  • a means tested care fee based on assets and income
  • an accommodation payment
  • fees for extra or additional (optional) services

Everybody pays this fee. It’s for day-to-day living costs such as meals, cleaning, laundry, heating and cooling. For some people, this is the only fee they may need to pay. It’s set by the Australian Government and works out to be 85 per cent of the single person rate of the basic age pension.

This is an extra contribution that residents may need to pay, on top of the basic fee, depending on income and assets. This fee is also set by the Australian Government based on a sliding scale.

This is for your accommodation in an aged care home. Some people will have their accommodation costs paid in full or in part by the Australian Government. Others will need to pay the accommodation price they negotiate with their aged care home.

You can choose to pay it as a one off refundable accommodation deposit or as a daily accommodation payment.

In some places you can opt for a higher standard of accommodation or extra services such as hairdressing or having pay TV in your room. These optional services may cost extra.

If you’re thinking about moving into an aged care home that is subsidised by the Australian Government, the first step is to organise a free assessment with an Aged Care Assessment Team. The assessment team will decide what type of care you need. To organise this free assessment call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

Yes, of course, we’d love to help you. We’re here to answer all your questions and guide you through the process of deciding whether one of our homes is the right choice for you or not. There’s never any pressure at all to choose our homes – we want you to make the right decision for you. To get in touch, simply call us or visit one of our aged care homes. We’ll assign you a Client Advisor who will be your one point of contact to make things easy for you.

It’s when you have a short term stay in an aged care home. You might need a higher level of care for a little while for reasons such as:

  • Your carer is going on holiday
  • You’ve been in hospital and need a helping hand before going home
  • You’re trying out whether you might move into permanent residential care
  • There’s an emergency and your carer is unavailable

Anyone can who has had an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment and has been approved for residential respite. It’s the same for permanent residential care. You can access residential respite in addition to receiving support from the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) or a Home Care Package.

If you are approved for residential respite care, you will pay the basic daily fee. This fee is determined by the government and they review it twice a year. You can also pay for respite on a fee-for-service basis. This will cost what the aged care facility sets as their fee.

Palliative care supports your physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs when facing a life-limiting illness. It helps manage symptoms, control pain, and keep you as comfortable as possible.

At Lutheran Services, our palliative care service supports our residents in their environment, surrounded by people they know and love. And we welcome new residents who need our support.

Palliative care can also be delivered in different environments including at home, in hospital, or in a hospice. While hospital is helpful for a short stay, Lutheran Services specialises in long-term continuous care for people with life-limiting illness.
