Understanding Registered Supporters in My Aged Care

From 1 November 2025, the way older Australians are supported in aged care changed, with the term “representative” in My Aged Care replaced by a new, formalised role: the Registered Supporter.
Registered Supporters help older people make and communicate decisions about their aged care.

What is a Supporter?
A Supporter is a trusted person (e.g. family member, friend, carer) who helps the older person understand and communicate decisions. They:
- Can access and share information with My Aged Care and providers.
- Cannot make decisions on behalf of the older person.
- Must act in good faith and respect the older person’s autonomy.
How Supporters can help
Registered Supporters may:
- Share information in a way the older person can understand (e.g. using plain language or visual aids)
- Help the older person explore aged care options and understand the consequences of each choice.
- Request, access, and receive information to assist the older person.
- Support the older person to clearly communicate their preferences to providers.
- Build the older person’s confidence and skills to make decisions independently.
- Attend assessments, care planning meetings, or provider discussions as a support person.
Safeguards against abuse or misuse
To protect older people, the new framework includes:
- Presumption of capacity: Older people are presumed able to make decisions
- Conflict of Interest Policy: Supporters must declare and manage any conflicts
- Duties and Accountability: Supporters must act in good faith, avoid coercion, and respect the older person’s rights.
- Reporting Mechanisms: Abuse, neglect, or misuse of the role must be reported to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
