Aged Care

AI tech delivering smiles

A high-tech oral health trial across our aged care sites is using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve dental care and residents’ quality of life.

Lutheran Services is the first aged care provider in Australia to trial the AI-powered app Smilio.ai, which delivers instant dental checks via smartphone. Images captured by trained staff are analysed by AI and reviewed by a dentist, providing personalised care plans and treatment recommendations.

Chief Clinician Melanie Wagner said poor oral health could have serious impacts.

Oral health issues and poorly fitting dentures can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, including their ability to eat and enjoy food. This trial will help make oral health care more proactive than reactive.

The 12-month rollout includes training by Seniors Dental Care Australia for staff, equipping them with the skills and tools to support residents’ daily oral care routines. The initiative is currently underway at six of our sites and will expand further across all our aged care locations.

Residents and families have shown strong support, attending information sessions and embracing the new technology.

This innovative trial demonstrates our commitment to accessible, proactive, and personalised care, helping residents continue to enjoy life’s simple joys – like a healthy smile!
