5 Steps to finding Home Care

Step 1

Check your eligibility

First up, get in touch with the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) to find out your eligibility to receive funding and what package level you’d receive. To book an assessment for yourself or a family member, call My Aged Care or call us on 1800 960 433 and a friendly Client and Community Advisor can help you.

Step 2

Find a Home Care provider

After you’ve received your ACAT approval, start researching local home care providers. Look at their waiting periods to start, which post codes they service, what they are happy to help with and whether it’s a different carer every time. Shortlist who you’d like to meet and book consultations with them.

Step 3

Understand the costs

Find out what you’ll need to pay all up. What’s the basic daily fee and what’s the income-tested care fee? Look at how often you’d need to pay. It’s a good idea to get personal financial advice so there are no surprises.

Step 4

Accept a package

Enter into a home care agreement with your chosen provider. They will develop a personalised care plan and you can create a package budget so you don’t overspend. You’ll receive a monthly statement of services which will outline everything.

Step 5

Start your Home Care journey

Start receiving care and services to make life easier. After a little bit of time you can review your plan and look at whether it could be better. If you go into hospital or away remember you can always pause your package. We hope you’re happy with your home care and if you’re not, then look at revising it.

Let’s get the ball rolling

Looking for a helping hand but aren’t sure where to start? We understand that taking the first step can be daunting. That’s why we’re here to help make this as easy as possible. One of the special things we offer at Lutheran Services is a dedicated Client and Community Advisor who will be with you all the way. We’ll come to you

Book a consultation

Sometimes it’s much easier to chat in person. We’re happy to come and meet with you and your family to explain what we do and answer any questions. It would be great to get to know a bit about you so we can let you know how we could support your lifestyle. Of course this is a free consultation and there’s no obligation at all.

Here to answer your questions

At Lutheran Services, we genuinely really want you to be happy. So we take the time to tailor our Home Care services to really meet your needs. We’ll come up with a plan together and make sure it all suits you.

The first step is finding out if you can get government funding. To do this you need to be assessed by your local Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). You can arrange an appointment by:

  • Speaking to your doctor
  • Visiting the My Aged Care website
  • Phoning My Aged Care on 1800 200 422

Confused about where to start? Give us a call  on 1800 960 433 and we’ll talk you through it.

There are four levels of Home Care packages which are provided through federal government funding. You will be assessed by the ACAT team as to whether you receive a basic, low, intermediate or high level of support. We can explain it all to you, the first step is getting your ACAT assessment.

The government funds most of the cost and sets a cap on the maximum fees you would pay. Fees are determined by your income, not your assets. If you are a full pensioner, the maximum basic daily fee is about $10 a day. This fee may change in line with the twice-yearly changes to the age pension. If you’re not a full pensioner, you may be asked to pay a contribution in addition to the basic daily fee.

Financial hardship assistance is available in some circumstances, and other financial assistance (for example, oxygen supplements) may be available. The My Aged Care website has detailed information about income-tested fees and a fee estimator.

You can receive Private Home Care services. Whatever your needs or situation, there is a simple way to get the in-home help you want by purchasing your own Private Home Care services.

This might suit you if you are:

  • Waiting for your ACAT assessment/Home Care Package
  • Require immediate support
  • Do not wish to use a government subsidy

Yes, you can. You might get funding for a certain amount of care and then want to pay for extra visits on top of that. Top up services are available to you at our standard Lutheran Services rates.

We’ll meet you at your home and together we’ll make a care plan that suits you. We’ll ask you about your lifestyle and the things you enjoy doing. We believe personal goals are an important part of your care plan too. What do you want to be able to do? We’re here to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle and be as independent as comfortably possible.
