Gympie Aged Care services up smile with Happy Table Program

Lutheran Services Cooinda Aged Care in Gympie is proving there’s nothing quite like a good meal to lift your spirits through its innovative Happy Table program.

Introduced to Cooinda in 2024, Happy Table is Lutheran Services’ dining model designed to serve high-quality, nourishing meals made with fresh ingredients, reducing reliance on supplements and ensuring residents receive the nutrients they need.
The evidence-based initiative combines food science, expert dietitian input, resident feedback, and a strong focus on the social experience to deliver tailored menus to improve mealtime nutrition, enjoyment and dignity.

Since launching the Happy Table program, Lutheran Services has received widespread positive feedback from residents and families alike with recent organisation-wide survey results reporting that 95 per cent of resident respondents believe their dining environment is enjoyable and comfortable, while 96 per cent confirmed they are always or often greeted politely at the start of meal service.

Cooinda Aged Care Service Manager Gill Hyett said the program is transforming how residents and families experience food and mealtimes.

“At Lutheran Services, we’re redefining what aged care dining looks like. Staff and residents collaborate to create relaxing, homely dining experiences.

“It’s not just about meeting nutritional needs; we’re also creating positive interactions that support wellbeing, dignity and enjoyment.

“In our dining rooms, we play ambient background music keeping noise low so residents can connect and converse to ensure a welcoming environment, which has a direct impact on residents’ health, mood and overall quality of life,” Ms Hyett said.
“Food focus groups and resident surveys help us to listen closely to what residents tell us and implement suggestions where possible.

“Their input directly influences our menus, ensuring meals are familiar, enjoyable and something to look forward to.”

Barry Coventry, whose wife Clare has lived at Cooinda for three years, regularly joins her for meals and says the food and service has always been outstanding.

“The food is consistently high quality — it’s tasty, filling, and well presented.

“What stands out most for me is the genuine care and pride staff bring to their roles. It shows in every interaction I’ve had, from the kitchen and café staff to those serving meals in the dining room.

“The staff create a warm, friendly atmosphere that makes a real difference to residents and their families,” Mr Coventry said.
By combining nutrition, presentation, environment and genuine human connection, Happy Table is elevating aged care dining across Lutheran Services aged care communities.
