TWO dance crews from disability groups in Logan and Japan took to the Butter Box Theatre stage in a celebration of performance on Saturday night, March 3.

The Keystone Centre dance crew and the performers from Japan’s Popeye disability service were collaborating to create Confusion Inclusion.

The Confusion Inclusion dance event takes its name from the idea that being creative is a way to connect.

Lutheran Services Creative Programs Advisor Clare Apelt said the ethos of connection drives the project.

“The Japanese performance, called Ugokukarada, is about dance being accessible for everyone and challenges what it means to be an artist,” Ms Apelt said.

“The Keystone Centre dancers created movements inspired by delicious foods so they can dance to their favourite 80s songs – in the theme of a food fight.”

Popeye’s chief director Miki Yamaguchi said he was excited to bring their mixed-abilities performers to Queensland, and collaborate with them.

“We were excited to meet and share ideas and perform with another group with a similar outlook,’’ Mr Yamaguchi said.

Ms Apelt said dance was a way to reach beyond the differences between us to find a common place of joy and expression.

Trinity Disability Service on the Gold Coast has started a new program to help women learn about their health and wellbeing, socialise with others and kickstart their creativity.

The program, called CAKE, is designed to be fun, educational and creative.

CAKE stands for Creative, Active, Kind and Enjoyable.

Women wanting to join in can call Trinity on 5564 7888 to book – the cost is $10 per session which are held each Tuesday 10am to 12pm at the Southport Community Centre.

This month, clients and staff of the Keystone Centre and the Endeavour Foundation performed “A Musical Matinee” – creative collaboration between the organisations that has been five months in the making.

The Keystone-Endeavour Dance Crew have been meeting weekly since May to practise at the Trinder Park Recreation Hall.

Joy, creative expression and friendship were highlights of this process, along with developing dance skills and fitness.

We hope to be collaborating more with the Endeavour Foundation in these sorts of projects in the future.

The NDIS rollout has been occurring across Brisbane, Beenleigh and Robina in the last half of this year.

Lutheran Services offers a range of services covered by the NDIS including day services, accommodation, behaviour support, community participation and life skill development.  We also offer travel and transport assistance.

Don’t know exactly what the NDIS is or how it can help?

It is the Australian Government’s new system for funding disability support services.

It aims to give you more flexibility – you get to choose what services you would like and who provides them.

For our existing clients, the people and places you know and trust will remain the same.

If you’re new to Lutheran Services, we welcome the opportunity to get to know you and help you with your NDIS application, preparation and planning.

From us to you – Merry Christmas. Wishing you a joyous day spent with loved ones.

Hip Hop Inclusion grew out of Lutheran Services’ Confusion Inclusion dance project.  It has brought together dancers from the Keystone Centre, Endeavour Foundation, and Loganlea State High School Year 9 students.

The crews rehearsed together and performed at the Logan Youth Festival in April this year.

Thank you to Bo and Clare from Lutheran Services, Kimberly and Andrew from Endevaour Foundation, Sammie from Loganlea SHS, Creative Director Aaron and everyone else who made this project possible.

Lutheran Services’ Graceville staff in Nambour are piloting a program to help clients navigate the NDIS system.

Community Services Manager – Disability North Scott Mitchell says the program, named Support Coordination, was getting strong referrals after only three months in operation.

“We realised there is a big need for something like this,” he said.

“Our staff partner with NDIS clients in planning, selecting, using and reviewing their supports.  They help them build their plan and answer any questions. They also help negotiate service agreements and quotes.”

Scott says Graceville is an impartial partner in finding appropriate programs for clients.

“Because of this we give them three to four options and act independently from our service provision arm.

“The clients have all the choice and control – we just help them to plan well and meet their goals.”

After a review period, the program is set to be rolled out to other Lutheran Services sites early next year.

A message of thanks from Bishop Paul Smith to our care givers on behalf of all Lutheran congregations in Queensland.

Lutheran Services was pleased to be able to thank staff recently for their enormous efforts during the COVID pandemic.

Large brightly coloured posters with a loud and proud ‘thank you’ message greeted staff when they arrived. A sweet treat was a small token of thanks.

It’s wonderful to celebrate our workers – including staff across disability, aged care and youth & family – who bring their smiles to people’s homes everyday.

Thank you!

When COVID-19 hit and put the NRL season on hold, the footy mad team at Keystone Centre, Woodridge started hosting and posting the Keystone Footy Show to YouTube.

After half a dozen episodes, State of Origin champ and all-round nice guy Scott Prince was their first guest on the most recent episode.

It’s going to be difficult to top this one!

Community Services Manager Dianne Goddard said plans were in the works to continue the Keystone Footy Show next season, possibly in a slightly different format.

“We are looking to buy some more equipment and next year, we’ll continue the show – maybe even tackle some other sports in the off-season,” she said.

“It’s not just footy we love here at Keystone!”
